Serendipity is the occurence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. I looked up the word on the Internet, and I found out that it was serendipity that led to the discovery of penicillin, blasting gelatin, and polyethylene. It also led to the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation—whatever that was. The serendipity I had in mind was nothing compared to those!

When I hear the word serendipity, feelings of delight, tranquility, and bliss come to mind. When I hear the word serendipity,Leaves3_2 I see myself leisurely walking down a path lined with dozens and dozens of trees. I am in deep thought, thinking of how I could mend a problem. But then a soft breeze blows, and the leaves begin to fall. Small, round, brilliant leaves. More and more come showering down like rain, forming heaps on the ground. It is beautiful. I look around, but nobody else seems to notice but me. Without hesitation, I then throw my bag into the air, run to where the trees are, and marvel at the graciously falling leaves. At that moment as I was swirling about with my head looking upward and my arms swinging freely, I feel my worries fly away with every gush of wind. Ah, bliss.


But—going back to reality, I didn’t and I couldn’t do that, for not only would I Fallingleaves_1be very late for class, people would think I’m insane as well. Every serendipitous moment was all but a fantasy. In the first place, I wasn’t walking the path at my leisure. I was thinking of how I could reach the classroom in the shortest time possible—I was fifteen minutes late already. As I was scurrying my way, I saw the glorious leaves falling but all that I was able to do was to glance at them with longing.
